Gastrointestinal Symptoms

Gastrointestinal symptoms are patient-reported or observed changes involving the digestive tract, such as abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, bloating, or altered appetite, and they can signal conditions ranging from transient irritation to serious disease. They arise when processes such as intestinal motility, fluid secretion, mucosal inflammation, visceral sensitivity, or microbial activity become disrupted. In clinical practice, evaluating symptom onset, location, frequency, severity, associated findings, and warning signs helps distinguish functional disorders from infection, inflammation, obstruction, bleeding, or malignancy. This structured assessment guides testing and treatment while supporting earlier recognition of dehydration, nutritional compromise, and other complications.

Here, a protocol to isolate and establish primary fibroblast/myofibroblast (MF) cultures from frozen gastric, small intestinal, and colonic tissue-yielding cells with a MF phenotype-is presented. These cells express CD90, α-SMA and vimentin. MFs can be used for a variety of functional assays including enzymatic activity and cytokine production.

This protocol describes the use of excised intestinal tissue preparations or "intestinal sacs" as an ex vivo model of intestinal barrier function. This model may be used to assess integrity of both the epithelial barrier and the mucous gel layer at specific intestinal sites in animal models of digestive disease.

The human digestive system is an intricate and essential network for nutrient absorption and waste elimination. It encompasses the gastrointestinal (GI) tract and several accessory organs. Here's a detailed walkthrough of this complex system: Oral Cavity: The starting point of the digestive process. It comprises lips, cheeks, teeth, and salivary glands within mucous membranes. It extends to the soft palate, the floor of the mouth, and the tongue. Pharynx: It is a tubular...
