Intensive Care Procedure

Intensive care procedures are specialized clinical interventions used to assess, monitor, and support patients with life-threatening illness or injury, where rapid physiological changes require continuous care. They combine structured assessment with techniques such as airway management, mechanical ventilation, vascular access, fluid or medication delivery, and continuous monitoring of oxygenation, circulation, and neurological status. Performed with aseptic technique and frequent reassessment, these procedures help clinicians stabilize vital functions, identify deterioration, guide targeted treatment, and reduce preventable complications. In clinical education and research, standardized procedural training strengthens team coordination, supports evidence-based decisions, and improves the safety and quality of critical care.

Source: Kay Stewart, RVT, RLATG, CMAR; Valerie A. Schroeder, RVT, RLATG. University of Notre Dame, IN Mice and rats account for a large proportion of the animals used in biomedical research. Ensuring their welfare is both an ethical responsibility and essential for scientific validity. There are general procedures that apply to the majority of these mice and rats, but some of the animals, such as the immunocompromised ones, require additional steps to be taken to sustain them for...

Tracheostomy Care II: Procedure

2025

Tracheostomy care is an essential nursing skill that involves cleaning and maintaining a tracheostomy tube to prevent infection and other complications. Here's a step-by-step guide explaining each procedure with its rationale. Note that disposable gloves are to be worn at all times and changed as often as needed to maintain a sterile work environment, and to protect both patient and healthcare worker. Step 1: Perform hand hygiene, and put on personal protective equipment: gown, gloves, mask and...

Electrical Impedance Tomography is a non-invasive, radiation-free, real-time pulmonary ventilation monitoring tool. By measuring impedance changes in the thorax, it can visualize the distribution of air on a breath-by-breath basis. Initially intended for ventilation monitoring, electrical impedance tomography can also measure perfusion via intravenous injection of a saline solution.

2019

Structured protocols are necessary to provide answers on research questions in critically ill patients. The Simple Intensive Care Studies (SICS) provides an infrastructure for repeated measurements in critically ill patients including clinical examination, biochemical analysis and ultrasonography. SICS projects have specific focus but the structure is flexible to other investigations.
