Intestinal Perfusion Studies

Intestinal perfusion studies are clinical investigations that evaluate blood flow and oxygen delivery to the bowel, helping identify inadequate circulation before tissue injury becomes irreversible. They assess perfusion by measuring blood movement through mesenteric arteries and the intestinal microcirculation, often with imaging or physiologic indicators that reveal reduced flow, vascular obstruction, or altered tissue oxygenation. These studies support the diagnosis and monitoring of conditions such as acute mesenteric ischemia, intestinal infarction, and postoperative hypoperfusion. By linking vascular function with bowel viability, they guide urgent treatment decisions and improve understanding of how circulatory failure contributes to gastrointestinal disease.

The porcine model of liver normothermic machine perfusion (NMP), described here, can be successfully used to study NMP as a preservation strategy, a tool for viability assessment, and a platform for organ repair. It holds a high translational value, however it is technically challenging and labor-intensive.

Using Caco-2 Cells to Study Lipid Transport by the Intestine

Caco-2 cells can serve as an in vitro model to study the enterocyte transport of lipids, and lipid-soluble drugs/vitamins. The permeable membrane system separates the apical from the basolateral compartment, while the lentivirus expression system offers an effective gene overexpression method. The isolation of lipoproteins is confirmed by TEM.
