Mercury Sphygmomanometer

A mercury sphygmomanometer is a clinical instrument that measures arterial blood pressure using an inflatable cuff and a calibrated column of mercury, traditionally serving as a reference standard for assessing cardiovascular status. As the cuff is inflated around the upper arm, it temporarily occludes the brachial artery; controlled deflation allows clinicians to identify Korotkoff sounds with a stethoscope, while the mercury column indicates systolic and diastolic pressure. Accurate technique, cuff placement, and patient positioning are essential for reliable readings. Although mercury hazards have encouraged alternatives, this device remains important for teaching, validating automated monitors, and supporting clinical measurement standards.

Bacterial Biosensor Assay for Detecting Bioavailable Mercury Under Anaerobic Conditions

Source: Stenzler, B. R. et. al., An Anaerobic Biosensor Assay for the Detection of Mercury and Cadmium. J. Vis. Exp. (2018)This video demonstrates the use of genetically engineered bacterial biosensors to accurately measure the bioavailable fraction of mercury ions under anaerobic conditions. By varying the concentration of magnesium sulfate, the assay ensures that the biosensor selectively responds to free mercury ions, as indicated by changes in fluorescence intensity.

Measuring Circulatory System Function in Humans ExpandBefore starting the experiment go to the front of the room and collect an alcohol swab, a sphygmomanometer, and a stethoscope. Clean the earpieces with the alcohol swab and then insert them into your ears. To check if the stethoscope is in the on position, gently tap the flat metal disc called the diaphragm. If you hear a sound it's on. If not, turn the metal disc and tap again and keep turning and tapping the disc until you hear a sound.

Homeostasis Conditions in the external environment of an organism can change rapidly and drastically. To survive, organisms must maintain a fairly constant internal environment, which involves continuous regulation of temperature, pH, and other factors. This balanced state is known as homeostasis, which describes the processes by which organisms maintain their optimal internal conditions. To maintain homeostasis, organisms have developed structures with distinct functions. Physiology is the...
