Apolipoprotein B Assay

An apolipoprotein B assay is a laboratory test that measures apolipoprotein B, the primary structural protein of atherogenic lipoprotein particles, in biological samples. In antibody-based assays, antibodies bind apolipoprotein B and generate a measurable signal, often through immunoturbidimetric or other immunochemical detection, that is compared with calibrated standards to determine concentration. Quantifying apolipoprotein B helps characterize lipid transport, lipoprotein assembly, and metabolic changes in cells, tissues, or organisms. In developmental biology, the assay can support studies of how lipid metabolism changes during growth, differentiation, and disease-related developmental processes.

We describe a high-throughput, multiplex, and targeted proteomic cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) assay developed with potential for clinical translation. The test can quantitate potential markers and risk factors for neurodegeneration, such as the apolipoprotein E variants (E2, E3 and E4), and measure their allelic expression.

Drosophila melanogaster is a genetically and behaviorally tractable model system that has been used to understand the molecular and cellular basis of many important biological processes for over a century 1. Drosophila has been well exploited to gain insights into the genetic basis of fly behavior.
