Cisplatin Staining

Cisplatin staining is a cell-viability assay that uses the platinum-based compound cisplatin to distinguish cells with intact plasma membranes from damaged or dying cells. Because cisplatin can enter membrane-compromised cells more readily, it binds intracellular proteins and nucleic acids, producing a measurable signal that enables separation of viable and nonviable populations by flow cytometry or mass cytometry. In developmental biology, this approach helps quantify cell death, tissue damage, and treatment responses in developing cells, embryos, or organoid models. Combined with lineage markers and other phenotypic measurements, cisplatin staining supports analysis of how genetic changes, environmental conditions, or experimental treatments affect cell survival.

DiRita1 1 Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics, Michigan State University, East Lansing, Michigan, United States of America Bacteria are diverse microorganisms found nearly everywhere on Earth. Many properties help distinguish them from each other, including but not limited to Gram-staining type, shape and arrangement, production of capsule, and formation of spores. To observe these properties, one...
