Quail Embryos

Quail embryos are developing avian embryos within fertilized eggs and serve as accessible models for studying how cells and tissues form over time. During incubation, rapid cell division is followed by gastrulation, tissue patterning, and organogenesis, while the embryo can be observed at defined developmental stages and manipulated experimentally. In developmental biology, quail embryos help researchers investigate cell migration, tissue differentiation, morphogenesis, and interactions between embryonic structures, providing a practical system for linking gene activity and cellular behavior to body-plan formation. Their relatively short development and experimental accessibility also support comparative studies of vertebrate development.

2023

This video describes how to perform microinjections that deliver reagents into live Drosophila embryos. Researchers can use this method to introduce exogenous compounds like nucleic acids and proteins during the early stages of embryo development. The featured protocol demonstrates how to set up and perform the procedure for injection of any soluble reagent–here, a fluorescent protein for live imaging experiments.
