Zebrafish Model Studies

Zebrafish model studies use Danio rerio to investigate biological processes in a vertebrate organism, making them valuable for developmental biology and disease research. Because zebrafish embryos undergo external fertilization and develop rapidly outside the mother, researchers can observe organ formation directly through their transparency and manipulate gene function using genetic and molecular methods. Live imaging, targeted mutations, and controlled exposure to experimental compounds help reveal how signaling pathways regulate cell fate, tissue patterning, and embryonic development. Findings from these studies support comparative analyses of vertebrate development and can identify mechanisms relevant to human congenital disorders and therapeutic research.

2016

Renal injuries incurred from nephrotoxins, which include drugs ranging from antibiotics to chemotherapeutics, can result in complex disorders whose pathogenesis remains incompletely understood. This protocol demonstrates how zebrafish can be used for disease modeling of these conditions, which can be applied to the identification of renoprotective measures.

A Scalable Model to Study the Effects of Blunt-Force Injury in Adult Zebrafish

We modified the Marmarou weight drop model for adult zebrafish to examine a breadth of pathologies following blunt-force traumatic brain injury (TBI) and the mechanisms underlying subsequent neuronal regeneration. This blunt-force TBI model is scalable, induces a mild, moderate, or severe TBI, and recapitulates injury heterogeneity observed in human TBI.

The zebrafish maxillary barbel is an integumentary sense organ containing ectodermal, mesodermal and neural crest derivatives. Importantly, the adult barbel can regenerate after proximal amputation. This video introduces maxillary barbel development and demonstrates a surgical protocol to induce regeneration, followed by collection, embedding and downstream imaging of barbel specimens.

Development of an Ethanol-induced Fibrotic Liver Model in Zebrafish to Study Progenitor Cell-mediated Hepatocyte Regeneration

Sustained fibrosis with deposition of excessive extracellular matrix proteins leads to cirrhosis. Alcohol abuse is one of the main causes of severe liver disease. We established an ethanol-induced zebrafish fibrotic liver model to study the mechanisms and strategies of promoting hepatocyte regeneration upon alcohol-induced injury.

Using the optokinetic response to study visual function of zebrafish

Optokinetic response has been widely used to assess the visual functions of larval zebrafish. Nevertheless, the standard protocol for larval fish is not yet readily applicable in adults1-5. Here, we introduce how to measure the OKR of adult zebrafish using a new protocol which is established in our lab.
