Uv Ozone Treatment

UV ozone treatment is a surface-cleaning and modification technique that uses ultraviolet radiation and ozone to remove organic contaminants and alter material properties. A UV source converts oxygen into ozone at approximately 185 nm, while shorter-wavelength radiation promotes ozone decomposition and generates highly reactive oxygen species that oxidize surface-bound hydrocarbons. In engineering, this process improves surface wettability, adhesion, and cleanliness for polymers, glass, metals, and microfabricated components before bonding, coating, or analysis. Because it operates without liquid solvents and can treat delicate surfaces, UV ozone treatment supports precise fabrication, contamination control, and materials research.

Measuring Tropospheric Ozone

2023

Source: Laboratories of Margaret Workman and Kimberly Frye - Depaul University Ozone is a form of elemental oxygen (O3), a molecule of three oxygen atoms bonded in a structure that is highly reactive as an oxidizing agent. Ozone occurs in both the stratosphere and the troposphere levels of the atmosphere. When in the stratosphere (located approximately 10-50 km from the earth’s surface), ozone molecules form to the ozone layer and help prevent harmful UV rays from reaching Earth’s surface. In...

The storage conditions of platelet products create an ideal environment for bacterial contaminants to multiply to dangerous levels. The goal of this study was to use a colony forming assay to evaluate a riboflavin based pathogen reduction process against high titer bacterial contamination in human platelet products.

Ultraviolet-Visible (UV-Vis) Spectroscopy

Source: Laboratory of Dr. B. Jill Venton - University of Virginia Ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy is one of the most popular analytical techniques because it is very versatile and able to detect nearly every molecule. With UV-Vis spectroscopy, the UV-Vis light is passed through a sample and the transmittance of light by a sample is measured. From the transmittance (T), the absorbance can be calculated as A=-log (T). An absorbance spectrum is obtained that shows the absorbance of a...

Determination Of NOx in Automobile Exhaust Using UV-VIS Spectroscopy

Source: Laboratories of Margaret Workman and Kimberly Frye - Depaul University In the troposphere, ozone is naturally formed when sunlight splits nitrogen dioxide (NO2): NO2 + sunlight → NO + O O + O2 → O3 Ozone (O3) can go on to react with nitric oxide (NO) to form nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and oxygen: NO + O3 → NO2 + O2 This results in no net gain of ozone (O3). However, with the anthropogenic production of ozone forming precursors (NO, NO2, and volatile organic compounds) through the combustion...
