Aerosol Particle Mass Analyzer

An Aerosol Particle Mass Analyzer is an instrument that measures the mass of individual airborne particles, providing information that complements particle number, size, and composition measurements in environmental research. It charges aerosol particles and introduces them into a rotating electric field, where opposing centrifugal and electrostatic forces select particles according to their mass-to-charge ratio. By coupling mass classification with particle-size or chemical analysis, researchers can investigate particle density, mixing state, and the relationship between particle mass and aerodynamic behavior. These measurements support studies of atmospheric transport, pollution sources, climate-relevant aerosols, and health risks associated with inhalable particulate matter.

A whole-body nanoparticle aerosol inhalation exposure facility was constructed for nano-sized titanium dioxide (TiO2) inhalation toxicology studies. This system provides nano-TiO2 aerosol test atmospheres that have: 1) a steady mass concentration; 2) a homogenous composition free of contaminants; and 3) a stable particle size distribution during aerosol generation.

Mass Analyzers: Overview

2024

The mass analyzer is a crucial component of the mass spectrometer. In the ionization chamber, the vaporized sample is bombarded with a high-energy electron beam to generate a radical cation and further fragment into neutral molecules, radicals, and cations. A series of negatively charged accelerator plates accelerate the cations into the mass analyzer. The mass analyzer separates ions according to their mass-to-charge (m/z) ratios and then directs them to the detector. The common types of mass...
