Environmental Kuznets Curve

The Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) is an economic hypothesis proposing that some forms of environmental degradation rise during early economic development, peak at intermediate income levels, and decline as income increases. The proposed mechanism links industrialization and resource-intensive production to initial pollution growth, followed by shifts toward cleaner technologies, stronger environmental regulation, and greater demand for environmental quality. Researchers use the EKC to examine relationships among economic growth, pollution, energy use, and environmental policy across countries and regions. Its relevance is substantial, but the pattern varies by pollutant, scale, trade conditions, and policy context, so economic growth alone does not guarantee environmental improvement.

Bacterial Growth Curve Analysis and its Environmental Applications

2023

Source: Laboratories of Dr. Ian Pepper and Dr. Charles Gerba - The University of Arizona Demonstrating Author: Luisa Ikner Bacteria are among the most abundant life forms on Earth. They are found in every ecosystem and are vital for everyday life. For example, bacteria affect what people eat, drink, and breathe, and there are actually more bacterial cells within a person’s body than mammalian cells. Because of the importance of bacteria, it is preferable to study particular species of bacteria...

Calibration Curves

Source: Laboratory of Dr. B. Jill Venton - University of Virginia Calibration curves are used to understand the instrumental response to an analyte and predict the concentration in an unknown sample. Generally, a set of standard samples are made at various concentrations with a range than includes the unknown of interest and the instrumental response at each concentration is recorded. For more accuracy and to understand the error, the response at each concentration can be repeated so an error...

Environmental Enrichment for Rodents

All animal procedures described here must be conducted in accordance with institutional animal ethics guidelines and approved by IACUC. All procedures must follow the principles of the 3Rs—Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement—and must be performed by trained personnel. Environmental enrichment involves objects and practices that encourage natural behaviors, improve psychological well-being, and promote better welfare in laboratory rodents. Environmental enrichment should be tailored to the...

Here we present a protocol to simply and reliably measure the lung pressure-volume curve in mice, showing that it is sufficiently sensitive to detect phenotypic parenchymal changes in two common lung pathologies, pulmonary fibrosis and emphysema. This metric provides a means to quantify the lung’s structural changes with developing pathology.

Carbon and Nitrogen Analysis of Environmental Samples

2023

Source: Laboratories of Margaret Workman and Kimberly Frye - Depaul University Elemental Analysis is a method used to determine elemental composition of a material. In environmental samples such as soils, scientists are particularly interested in the amounts of two ecologically important elements, nitrogen and carbon. Elemental analysis by the flash combustion technique works by oxidizing the sample with a catalyst through combustion in a high-temperature chamber. The products of combustion are...
