Eps Extraction

EPS extraction is the laboratory recovery of extracellular polymeric substances, the mixture of secreted polymers that surrounds microorganisms in biofilms, flocs, and sediments. The procedure separates this matrix from cells by loosening cell–polymer associations and collecting soluble and bound fractions, while controlling extraction strength to limit cell disruption and chemical alteration of the material. In environmental research, the resulting extracts help characterize polysaccharides, proteins, nucleic acids, and other matrix components that influence adhesion, aggregation, contaminant binding, and biofilm stability. EPS extraction therefore supports studies of wastewater treatment, microbial ecology, sludge settling, and the fate and transport of pollutants in aquatic and soil systems.

An Assay to Study Bile-Salt Induced Biofilm Formation through EPS Matrix Detection

2025

This video demonstrates a fluorescence-based method for quantifying bile salt-induced biofilm formation. Upon the addition of bile salts in the culture of a pathogenic enteric bacteria, biofilm production is detected using a fluorescent lectin that binds to the polysaccharides in the extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) matrix of the biofilm.

EPS and iPS Cells in Disease Research

Embryonic and induced pluripotent stem cells are excellent models for disease research because of their ability to self-renew and differentiate into most cell types. Somatic cells from a patient are isolated and reprogrammed into induced pluripotent stem cells or iPSCs. These iPSCs are later differentiated into the desired cell type, which mirrors the diseased cell of the patient. In this way, disease models have been created for investigating diseases such as Down syndrome, type I diabetes,...

Extraction Extraction is a common technique used in organic chemistry to isolate a target compound. In the extraction process, a solute is transferred from one phase to another to separate it from unreacted starting materials or impurities. Extraction is also used to facilitate the isolation of a solute from a reaction solvent that is difficult to remove by evaporation, such as a solvent with a high boiling point. Generally, there are three types of extractions. First, in solid-liquid...
