Floral Extract

Floral extracts are concentrated preparations made by isolating soluble chemical constituents from flowers, including pigments, phenolic compounds, and volatile molecules. They are produced by contacting fresh or dried floral tissue with a suitable solvent, allowing target compounds to dissolve before filtration and solvent removal; extraction conditions influence composition and yield. In environmental research, floral extracts help characterize plant responses to environmental stress and provide natural materials for studying pigments, bioactive compounds, and biodegradable product development. Their chemical profiles can also support comparisons among species or habitats.

Colletotrichum fioriniae Development in Water and Chloroform-based Blueberry and Cranberry Floral Extracts

2019

Here, bioassays designed to monitor the development of a fungal pathogen, Colletotrichum fioriniae, in the presence of blueberry or cranberry floral extracts on glass coverslips are described. Water-, chloroform-, and field rainwater- based floral extraction techniques are detailed as well as insight into how this information can be applied.

This article illustrates the floral-dip method of Agrobacterium tumefaciens -mediated transformation of Arabidopsis thaliana. By introducing a cell-cycle regulated promoter-reporter, pTSO2::β-glucuronidase (GUS), into Arabidopsis, we illustrates how one detects GUS reporter expression in transgenic seedlings.

Here, we present the aluminum chloride colorimetric method, a direct analytical technique to determine flavonoids in calendula quantitatively. This approach utilizes a straightforward chemical reaction involving treating the calendula extract with an aluminum chloride reagent, forming a colored complex. The color intensity, assessed using spectrophotometry, correlates with the flavonoid concentration.

Extraction Extraction is a common technique used in organic chemistry to isolate a target compound. In the extraction process, a solute is transferred from one phase to another to separate it from unreacted starting materials or impurities. Extraction is also used to facilitate the isolation of a solute from a reaction solvent that is difficult to remove by evaporation, such as a solvent with a high boiling point. Generally, there are three types of extractions. First, in solid-liquid...

Extraction of Biomarkers from Sediments - Accelerated Solvent Extraction

Source: Laboratory of Jeff Salacup - University of Massachusetts Amherst The distribution of a group of organic biomarkers called glycerol-dialkyl glycerol-tetraethers (GDGTs), produced by a suite of archaea and bacteria, were found in modern sediments to change in a predictable manner in response to air or water temperature1,2. Therefore, the distribution of these biomarkers in a sequence of sediments of known age can be used to reconstruct the evolution of air and/or water temperature on...
