Plug Transfer Technique

The plug transfer technique is a method for moving a defined, plug-shaped portion of material from one medium or location to another while preserving its structure and composition. It typically uses a sterile, appropriately sized tool to remove the plug, align it with a receiving cavity or substrate, and place it with minimal compression or disturbance. In environmental research, this approach supports the controlled transfer of soil, sediment, plant, or microbial material for cultivation, comparison, and experimental manipulation. Consistent plug size and placement improve reproducibility when evaluating biological activity, growth, colonization, or environmental responses.

Formation of the Platelet Plug

2024

The platelet phase, the second stage of hemostasis, commences around 15-20 seconds after an injury. It follows and overlaps with the vascular phase, during which blood vessels constrict to minimize blood loss. As the injured blood vessel contracts, endothelial cells undergo contraction, revealing collagen fibers in the basement membrane and underlying connective tissue. Furthermore, the plasma membrane of endothelial cells becomes adhesive, preparing the site for platelet adhesion. Platelets...

When working in a laboratory, it is imperative to minimize sources of contamination. Aseptic technique refers to procedures that permit transfer of cultures and reagents while avoiding contact with non-sterile surfaces. Serological pipettes and micropipettors are used to measure precise volumes without compromising sterility of solutions used in experiments.

Bilayer Microfluidic Device for Combinatorial Plug Production

2023

The fabrication of a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-based bilayer device for the production of combinatorial libraries in water-in-oil emulsions (plugs) is presented here. The necessary hardware and software required to automate plug production are detailed in the protocol, and the production of a quantitative library of fluorescent plugs is also demonstrated.

Schlenk Lines Transfer of Solvents

Source: Hsin-Chun Chiu and Tyler J. Morin, laboratory of Dr. Ian Tonks—University of Minnesota Twin Cities Schlenk lines and high vacuum lines are both used to exclude moisture and oxygen from reactions by running reactions under a slight overpressure of inert gas (usually N2 or Ar) or under vacuum. Vacuum transfer has been developed as a method separate solvents (other volatile reagents) from drying agents (or other nonvolatile agents) and dispense them to reaction or storage vessels while...
