Synergy Prediction Mutants

Synergy prediction mutants are genetically altered strains or cells used to forecast whether combining perturbations will produce a phenotype stronger than expected from either mutation alone. Researchers generate or computationally select single and double mutants, then compare the observed double-mutant phenotype with a reference model, such as an additive expectation; a greater-than-expected effect suggests synergistic interaction, whereas suppression or a weaker effect indicates another genetic relationship. In genetics, these analyses help identify interacting genes, infer pathway organization, and reveal functional dependencies that may not be apparent from single-gene studies. The resulting interaction maps support mechanism-focused research and guide experiments testing gene function.

Gains from Acquisition: Synergy

2025

Synergies in corporate acquisitions represent the additional value generated when two companies combine, exceeding the sum of their independent contributions. These synergies typically arise from cost efficiencies, revenue growth, and strategic advantages. Financially, synergy is measured as the Net Present Value (NPV) of future benefits minus integration costs, reflecting the post-acquisition increase in value. Cost synergies are achieved by streamlining operations, eliminating redundancies,...

Antibiotic Susceptibility Testing: Epsilometer Tests to Determine MIC Values of Two Antibiotics and Evaluate Antibiotic Synergy

In 1928, Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin, an antibiotic that exerts its antibacterial function by interfering with cell wall regeneration (1). Other antibiotics with diverse mechanisms of...

This video demonstrates how to employ two neural stimulants, aldicarb and pentylenetetrazole (PTZ), in complementary ways to study synaptic function in the nematode, C. elegans. This complementary approach may also be used to shed light on evolutionarily conserved mechanisms for modulating neuronal synchrony and has implications for epilepsy and seizures.

Predicting Molecular Geometry

VSEPR Theory for Determination of Electron Pair Geometries The following procedure uses VSEPR theory to determine the electron pair geometries and the molecular structures: Write the Lewis structure of the molecule or polyatomic ion. Count the number of electron groups (lone pairs and bonds) around the central atom. A single, double, or triple bond counts as one region of electron density. Identify the electron-pair geometry based on the number of electron groups: linear, trigonal planar,...
