Antibiotic Sensitivity Testing

Antibiotic sensitivity testing, also called antimicrobial susceptibility testing, determines whether a microorganism is inhibited by particular antibiotics and helps guide effective treatment. In a typical assay, a standardized bacterial inoculum is exposed to antibiotic concentrations or drug-impregnated disks; growth inhibition is measured as a zone diameter or minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and interpreted against established breakpoints. In immunology and infection research, these results support targeted therapy, distinguish susceptible from resistant organisms, and reveal resistance patterns in clinical or environmental isolates. Reliable testing improves antimicrobial stewardship, reduces ineffective drug use, and provides surveillance data for tracking emerging resistance.

We have developed a microfluidic platform for rapid antibiotic susceptibility testing. Fluid is passed at high speeds over bacteria immobilized on the bottom of a microfluidic channel. In the presence of stress and antibiotic, susceptible strains of bacteria die rapidly. However, resistant bacteria can survive these stressful conditions.
