Bio-contained System

A bio-contained system is an engineered setup that confines biological materials, organisms, or processes to prevent unintended exposure and environmental release. It works through layered containment, combining sealed vessels or primary barriers with controlled access, directional airflow, filtration, monitoring, and validated decontamination procedures. In immunology and infection research, these systems support the controlled study of infectious agents, host-pathogen interactions, and immune responses while protecting personnel and surrounding environments. They help laboratories generate reproducible data, evaluate vaccines or therapeutics, and manage biological risks, making reliable containment essential for both experimental research and the safe development of medical interventions.

Using readily available materials, this biocontained composting system enables effective on-site disposal of large animal carcasses arising in the event of infectious disease outbreak. This procedure kills most infectious agents in carcasses and contaminated manure. Once infectious agent is confirmed non-viable, mature compost can be spread as fertilizer.

COVID-19 / Coronavirus Outbreak: A Rapidly Deployable Medical Facility Optimized for Epidemics (Smart Pod)

2020

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that healthcare providers perform screening tests on patients with symptoms of COVID-19 in an isolated room to protect other patients from potential exposure to the virus. The Smart Pod, a rapidly deployable medical facility that was designed in the wake of the Ebola virus, can serve as a biocontainment unit for airborne pathogens. This emergency solution has been developed by Baylor College of Medicine as a nimble, standardized...
