Epithelial Ciliated Strips

Epithelial ciliated strips are sheets of ciliated epithelial tissue used to study how mucosal surfaces protect the body from environmental particles and infectious agents. Their motile cilia beat in coordinated waves, moving the overlying mucus layer and trapped microbes toward clearance sites, while the intact epithelial surface preserves key host-pathogen interactions. In immunology and infection research, these preparations help investigators examine mucociliary transport, pathogen attachment and invasion, epithelial damage, and changes in ciliary activity caused by microbes or inflammatory signals. They provide a practical model for connecting epithelial barrier function with early innate immune defense and respiratory disease outcomes.

Techniques are described to immunostain phospho-epitopes in whole zebrafish embryos and then conduct two-color fluorescent confocal localization in cellular structures as small as primary cilia. The techniques for fixing and imaging can define the location and kinetics of the appearance or activation of specific proteins.

The fallopian tube (FT) is emerging as an alternative site of origin for serous ovarian carcinoma (SOC). This protocol describes a novel method for the isolation and ex vivo culture of fallopian tube epithelial cells. This system recapitulates the in vivo epithelium and allows the study of SOC pathogenesis.

Here we describe a detailed method for growing primary human bronchial epithelial cells from explants of human bronchial airway tissue including differentiated growth on an air-liquid interface. This method provides an abundant source of primary cells for investigating the role of the airway epithelium in human lung health and disease.

Voltammetry: Stripping Methods

2024

Anodic Stripping Voltammetry (ASV), Cathodic Stripping Voltammetry (CSV), and Adsorptive Stripping Voltammetry (AdSV) are electrochemical techniques used to determine trace amounts of analytes in solution. These methods involve applying a potential to an electrode and measuring the resulting current. Anodic Stripping Voltammetry (ASV) ASV is used to determine metals and metalloids at trace levels. It involves two steps: deposition and stripping. First, a negative potential is applied to the...
