Lung Infection

Lung infection is the invasion and multiplication of pathogenic microorganisms in the respiratory tract, where disease can impair gas exchange and trigger potentially serious inflammation. Bacteria, viruses, fungi, or other microbes may reach the bronchi or alveoli, overcome mucociliary clearance and local defenses, and activate innate immune responses involving epithelial cells, macrophages, cytokines, and recruited leukocytes. The resulting inflammation can produce symptoms such as cough, fever, and difficulty breathing, while adaptive immunity supports pathogen-specific control. Studying lung infection in immunology and infection research improves understanding of host-pathogen interactions and informs diagnostic strategies, antimicrobial treatment, vaccination, and therapies that limit harmful tissue damage.

Human tuberculosis infection is a complex process, which is difficult to model in vitro. Here we describe a novel 3D human lung tissue model that recapitulates the dynamics that occur during infection, including the migration of immune cells and early granuloma formation in a physiological environment.
