Rapid Influenza Diagnostic

Rapid influenza diagnostic testing refers to point-of-care methods that detect influenza infection quickly from respiratory specimens, supporting timely decisions in clinical and public-health settings. These tests commonly use immunochromatographic lateral-flow assays, in which antibodies bind influenza viral antigens and the resulting complexes migrate across a membrane to produce a visible line for influenza A or B. Results are typically available within minutes, helping clinicians assess patients, guide antiviral treatment, and strengthen infection-control measures. However, rapid antigen tests may miss infections when viral levels are low, so interpretation alongside symptoms, exposure history, and follow-up testing can improve diagnostic confidence.

This study describes diagnosis of avian influenza in wild birds using a portable rRT-PCR system. The method takes advantage of freeze-dried reagents to screen wild birds in a non-laboratory setting, typical of an outbreak scenario. Use of molecular tools provides accurate and sensitive alternatives for rapid diagnosis.

We describe a rapid, molecular-based Influenza A and B assay. The Influenza assay detects each target within 15 min by employing isothermal amplification with influenza-specific primers followed by target detection with molecular beacon probes. The Influenza A and B assay is user-friendly and required minimal hands-on time to perform.
