Artery Vein Anastomosis

Artery-vein anastomosis, also called an arteriovenous anastomosis, is a direct connection between an artery and a vein that allows blood to bypass the capillary bed. Because arterial pressure drives blood into the lower-pressure venous system, opening or creating this channel can rapidly alter local blood flow, vascular resistance, and heat exchange. Naturally occurring anastomoses contribute to thermoregulation, particularly in specialized skin regions, while surgically constructed connections form arteriovenous fistulas for hemodialysis access. Understanding their structure and hemodynamics helps clinicians assess circulation, manage vascular disorders, and design safer reconstructive and dialysis procedures.

We describe a method for creating a reliable model of cerebral venous hypertension in the adult mouse. This model has been widely described and tested in the rat. This new counterpart in the mice opens the possibility of using genetic modified animals and thereby broadens the applications of the model.

Carotid Artery and Jugular Vein Interposition: A Technique to Induce Venous Intimal Hyperplasia in Rabbit Model

This video demonstrates the interposition of the rabbit carotid artery with the jugular vein to induce venous intimal hyperplasia by subjecting the veins to arterial pressure. This model will help investigate molecular and genetic interventions to attenuate the progression of intimal hyperplasia after revascularization surgeries.

Training a Sophisticated Microsurgical Technique: Interposition of External Jugular Vein Graft in the Common Carotid Artery in Rats

Neointimal hyperplasia is the primary cause of stenosis in arterialized veins. We propose a new protocol whereby the right external jugular vein is grafted using the cuff technique in the common carotid artery of Sprague Dawley rats. The survival rate was 100 % at the time point of sacrifice.

Heterotopic Auxiliary Rat Liver Transplantation With Flow-regulated Portal Vein Arterialization in Acute Hepatic Failure

Auxiliary liver transplantation provides a temporary support in acute hepatic failure, until regeneration of the failing liver. The heterotopic auxiliary liver transplantation (HALT) with portal vein arterialization (PVA) renders sufficient liver function. We developed an analogous technique in the rat, to examine the influence of the portal vein arterialization on the morphology and function of the graft.

Using Point of Care Ultrasound to Augment Acquisition of Physical Exam Skills: Veins and Arteries

Source: Joseph H. Donroe, Rachel Liu; Yale School of Medicine, USA Vascular diseases make up most cases of emergency hospitalization and carry a high mortality risk. Point-of-care ultrasound or POCUS enables accurate diagnosis of these diseases and shortens the time between detection of the cause and selection of appropriate treatment strategies, thus, reducing the patient mortality rate. POCUS offers a safe, low-cost, and less invasive bedside tool for examining arteries and veins, besides its...
