Cardiac Risk Indicators

Cardiac risk indicators are measurable clinical findings, biomarkers, and patient characteristics used to estimate the likelihood of cardiovascular disease or a future cardiac event. They reflect processes that damage blood vessels or strain the heart, including elevated blood pressure, atherogenic cholesterol, impaired glucose regulation, inflammation, and reduced cardiac function; clinicians combine these data with factors such as age, smoking history, and family history to assess risk. In medicine, these indicators support screening, risk stratification, and personalized prevention, helping guide lifestyle counseling, diagnostic testing, and treatment while identifying people who may benefit from earlier intervention.

Certain organic substances change color in dilute solution when the hydronium ion concentration reaches a particular value. For example, phenolphthalein is a colorless substance in any aqueous solution with a hydronium ion concentration greater than 5.0 × 10−9 M (pH < 8.3). In more basic solutions where the hydronium ion concentration is less than 5.0 × 10−9 M (pH > 8.3), it is red or pink. Substances such as phenolphthalein, which can be used to determine the pH of a solution, are called...

2023

Source: Suneel Dhand, MD, Attending Physician, Internal Medicine, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center The cardiac assessment is one of the core examinations performed by almost every physician whenever encountering a patient. Disorders of the cardiac system are among the most common reasons for hospital admission, with conditions ranging from myocardial infarction to congestive heart failure. Learning a complete and thorough cardiac examination is therefore crucial for any practicing physician.

The present protocol describes methods for transgene expression in rat and mouse hearts by direct intramyocardial injection of the virus under echocardiography guidance. Methods for the assessment of the susceptibility of hearts to ventricular arrhythmias by the programmed electrical stimulation of isolated, Langendorff-perfused hearts are also explained here.
