Bone Infection Model

A bone infection model is an experimental system that reproduces key features of osteomyelitis, enabling researchers to study how infection damages bone and surrounding tissue. These models introduce pathogenic microorganisms into bone or adjacent tissues under controlled conditions, where bacterial colonization, inflammation, immune responses, and changes in bone remodeling can be monitored over time. Used in medicine and biomedical research, bone infection models help evaluate disease mechanisms, diagnostic approaches, antimicrobial therapies, implant-associated infections, and strategies for bone repair. By linking controlled laboratory observations with clinical problems, they support the development and testing of safer, more effective treatments for osteomyelitis.

This study presents an improved rabbit model infected with Staphylococcus aureus by blocking the same amount of bacteria in bone marrow. Vancomycin loaded calcium sulphate and autogenous bone are used for antibiotic and bone repair treatment. The protocol could be helpful for studying bone infection and regeneration.

Use of Galleria mellonella as a Model Organism to Study Legionella pneumophila Infection

The larva of the wax moth Galleria mellonella was recently established as an in vivo model to study Legionella pneumophila infection. Here, we demonstrate fundamental techniques to characterize the pathogenesis of Legionella in the larvae, including inoculation, measurement of bacterial virulence and replication as well as extraction and analysis of infected hemocytes.
