Chondrosarcoma Petrous Apex

Chondrosarcoma of the petrous apex is a rare malignant cartilage-producing tumor arising at the skull base, where it can affect critical nerves, blood vessels, and the brainstem. It typically develops from cartilaginous remnants near the petro-occipital synchondrosis and grows slowly, but progressive expansion can cause headache, hearing loss, diplopia, facial weakness, or other cranial nerve deficits. Diagnosis relies on clinical assessment and imaging, particularly computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging, which help distinguish the lesion from other skull-base tumors and define its extent. Treatment commonly involves maximal safe surgical removal, with radiotherapy considered for residual or unresectable disease.

Endolymphatic duct blockage is a relatively new surgical method for patients suffering from Ménière's disease. Following a regular mastoidectomy, the endolymphatic duct is identified and ligated using a regular titanium hemoclip. The effectiveness of this procedure is currently being assessed in a randomized trial.

The extracellular matrix plays a major role in defining the microenvironment of cells and in modulating cell behavior and phenotype. We describe a rapid method for the isolation of cell-derived extracellular matrix, which can be adapted to different scales for microscopic, biochemical, proteomic, or functional studies.
