Contour Tracking

Contour tracking is a computer-vision and image-processing technique that follows the boundaries of objects or anatomical structures across images, video frames, or imaging slices. It begins with an initial contour and updates its position by analyzing image intensity, edges, texture, or region similarity, while applying constraints that favor smooth, anatomically plausible movement. In medicine, contour tracking supports segmentation and measurement of organs, tumors, blood vessels, and surgical instruments in modalities such as ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging, and computed tomography. By reducing repeated manual tracing, it can improve workflow efficiency, quantify structural changes, and support treatment planning, image-guided procedures, and longitudinal disease monitoring.

Topographic Surveying and Contours

2025

Topographic surveying is critical for documenting the Earth's surface, focusing on capturing elevations, slopes, and natural and man-made features. It is essential in construction planning, water resource management, and land-use analysis. The primary outcome of such surveys is a topographic map, which uses contour lines to visually represent the shape and slope of the terrain, providing valuable insights into the landscape's characteristics.Contour lines are fundamental to understanding the...

Level Curves and Contour Maps

2026

Level curves and contour maps provide a way to visualize functions of two variables on a two-dimensional plane. A useful example is a topographic map, where curved lines represent locations that share the same elevation. In mathematics, these curves are called level curves or contour lines. Each contour line corresponds to points in the domain where the function has a constant value. For a function of two variables written as z = f(x,y), a level curve is defined by the equation f(x,y) = k,...

2015

Here it is shown how to track and quantify developmental processes in C. elegans. The methods presented are based on open-source tools that can be easily implemented. It is demonstrated how to reconstruct 3D cell-shape models, how to manually track subcellular structures, and how to analyze cortical contractile flow.

Design Example: Analyzing Capacity Contours for Flood Risk Assessment

2025

Flood risk assessment involves careful planning and analysis to ensure the safety of communities near water retention structures. Capacity contours are a vital tool in this process, as they illustrate the potential spread of water at specific levels in a given area. In the context of building a bund across a small valley, these contours play a critical role in evaluating the safety of nearby residential areas. In this example, the bund is intended to store stormwater in the valley. The engineers...

2015

Stereotactic ablative body radiation therapy (SBRT) involves the precise delivery of high-dose radiation to cancer tumor targets. A novel SBRT platform offers a first-of-its-kind gimbaled radiation accelerator mounted within a pivoting O-ring gantry capable of dynamic image-guided tumor tracking. Here, we describe dynamic tumor tracking for lung targets.
