Extravasation Assessment

Extravasation assessment is the systematic evaluation of fluid or medication that has leaked from a blood vessel into surrounding tissue, an event that can cause local injury and requires prompt recognition. Assessment examines the infusion site and nearby tissue for changes such as pain, swelling, erythema, coolness, blanching, reduced blood return, or altered skin integrity, while considering the infused substance and amount involved. In medicine, this process supports early intervention, helps limit tissue damage, and guides documentation, monitoring, and follow-up. Standardized assessment is especially important during intravenous therapy with irritant or vesicant medications.

Source: Madeline Lassche, MSNEd, RN and Katie Baraki, MSN, RN, College of Nursing, University of Utah, UT After peripheral intravenous (IV) access is initiated, it is important to assess and maintain the IV catheter according to institutional policies and nursing standards of practice. The regular assessment of the insertion site and the surrounding areas for signs of complications is necessary to prevent IV catheter complications, including infiltration, phlebitis, infection, extravasation, or...

A Technique to Assess the Immune Response against an Antigen by Inducing Skin Inflammation

2025

This video demonstrates an in vivo technique to assess a test antigen by inducing skin inflammation in a murine model. The test antigen—a hapten in an oil/acetone solution—is topically applied to the skin of the mouse ear, and inflammation of the skin is assessed after an adequate period.
