Leukemia Risk

Leukemia risk is the likelihood that a person will develop a cancer of the blood-forming tissues, particularly the bone marrow, where abnormal white blood cells can arise. Risk reflects the interaction of inherited susceptibility, acquired genetic and chromosomal changes, age, certain blood disorders, and exposures such as prior chemotherapy or ionizing radiation; these factors can disrupt normal cell growth and blood-cell production. Understanding leukemia risk supports patient counseling, surveillance of higher-risk populations, evaluation of concerning blood-count abnormalities, and research into disease causes. Risk assessment does not establish a diagnosis, but it can guide timely clinical evaluation and inform strategies for prevention and early detection.

The protocol aims to describe a mouse model for generating relapses of acute lymphoblastic leukemia, based on the dynamics of the response to induction chemotherapy.

G-10 Column Based Leukemia Cell Sorting: A Method to Purify Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia Cells from Bone Marrow Stromal Cells

2023

This video describes the separation of acute lymphoblastic leukemia cells from bone marrow stromal cells using gel-type ten cross-linked dextran G-10 columns. This method helps recover the population of tumor cells that have migrated beneath the adherent bone marrow stromal cells generating a "phase dim" tumor cell population.

Here we present a protocol for the isolation of leukemic cells from leukemia patients bone marrow and analysis of their metabolic state. Assessment of the metabolic profile of primary leukemia cells could help to better characterize the demand of primary cells and could lead up to more personalized medicine.
