Mitochondrial Morphology

Mitochondrial morphology refers to the size, shape, distribution, and internal organization of mitochondria, features that reflect how these organelles support cellular energy production and signaling. Mitochondria continually remodel through coordinated fusion and fission, while changes in cristae structure and membrane architecture influence oxidative phosphorylation, metabolite exchange, and responses to cellular stress. In medicine, assessing mitochondrial morphology helps researchers identify abnormalities associated with neurodegeneration, cancer, metabolic disorders, cardiovascular disease, and inherited mitochondrial conditions. Imaging and quantitative analysis of mitochondrial networks can therefore link structural changes to impaired function, clarify disease mechanisms, and support evaluation of potential therapies.
