Mouse Urogenital System

The mouse urogenital system comprises the kidneys, ureters, bladder, urethra, and reproductive organs that regulate fluid balance, waste removal, and reproduction. Its kidneys filter blood through glomeruli, modify the filtrate along renal tubules, and concentrate urine, while the reproductive tract produces gametes and supports their transport; these systems share developmental pathways and anatomical connections. Because mice have conserved urogenital anatomy and physiology, researchers use them to study kidney development, urinary tract disorders, reproductive biology, congenital anomalies, and drug effects. Findings from these models support investigations of disease mechanisms and the development of diagnostic and therapeutic strategies in medicine.

In this video, we describe the procedure for the dissection of the urogenital system or UGS from a male mouse model. This UGS is further dissected ex vivo to isolate the prostate gland and study its role in prostate cancer development.

A High Throughput in situ Hybridization Method to Characterize mRNA Expression Patterns in the Fetal Mouse Lower Urogenital Tract

Here, we describe an efficient high throughput in situ hybridization (ISH) method for visualizing patterns of mRNA expression in developing fetal mouse prostate tissue sections. The method can be easily adapted to visualize mRNA expression patterns in other mouse tissues or in tissues from other species.

To unravel the earliest molecular mechanisms underlying prostate cancer initiation, novel and innovative human model systems and approaches are desperately needed. The potential of pre-prostatic urogenital sinus mesenchyme (UGSM) to induce pluripotent stem cell populations to form human prostate epithelium is a powerful experimental tool in prostate research.

Microbiota of the Urogenital Tract

The human urogenital system, once thought to be sterile in healthy individuals, is now recognized as a complex microbial habitat. Advancements in molecular sequencing techniques have revealed that even in healthy adults, the kidneys and bladder harbor microbial populations similar to those found in the distal urethra, albeit in much lower abundance. These resident microorganisms, while generally innocuous, can become opportunistic pathogens under conditions that alter the urogenital...
