Retinal Integrity

Retinal integrity refers to the preservation of the retina’s structure, function, and specialized cellular interactions that support vision. It depends on coordinated activity among photoreceptors, retinal neurons, the retinal pigment epithelium, and the blood-retinal barrier, which regulates nutrient exchange while limiting harmful exposure. Assessing retinal integrity through clinical examination, imaging, and functional testing helps identify tissue disruption associated with retinal disease, injury, or treatment effects. In medicine, these measures support diagnosis, disease monitoring, prognosis, and evaluation of therapies designed to preserve or restore vision.

To investigate the blood-retinal barrier permeability and the inner limiting membrane integrity in animal models of retinal disease, we used several adeno-associated virus (AAV) variants as tools to label retinal neurons and glia. Virus mediated reporter gene expression is then used as an indicator of retinal barrier permeability.
