Transcanal Access

Transcanal access is a surgical approach that reaches the middle ear and adjacent temporal-bone structures through the external auditory canal, creating a direct route while limiting disruption of surrounding tissue. Surgeons work through this natural corridor under microscopic or endoscopic visualization, using specialized instruments to inspect, remove, repair, or treat targeted structures; the approach may require careful management of the ear canal, tympanic membrane, and middle-ear anatomy. In medicine, transcanal access supports selected otologic and skull-base procedures, including treatment of middle-ear disease and repair of hearing-related structures. Its value lies in focused access, reduced tissue dissection, and potentially faster recovery.
