Serum Interleukin-6

Serum interleukin-6 (IL-6) is the concentration of IL-6, a multifunctional cytokine, measured in blood serum to assess immune and inflammatory activity. Produced by immune, endothelial, and tissue cells, IL-6 binds its receptor and activates signaling pathways such as JAK-STAT, promoting acute-phase protein production and influencing immune-cell development and metabolism. Because circulating IL-6 can rise during infection, tissue injury, autoimmune disease, and other inflammatory conditions, serum IL-6 measurement supports research into disease mechanisms and biomarker development. In medicine, it may help characterize inflammatory responses, monitor treatment effects, and investigate targeted therapies that inhibit IL-6 signaling.

This video demonstrates a procedure of fecal microbiota transplantation in an interleukin-10 deficient mouse with colon inflammation. Colonized fecal microbes in the gut release secondary metabolites, eliciting anti-inflammatory cytokine release and reducing colon inflammation.

Isolation of Small Noncoding RNAs from Human Serum

This protocol describes a method for extracting small RNAs from human serum. We have used this method to isolate microRNAs from cancer serum for use in DNA arrays and also singleplex quantitative PCR. The protocol utilizes phenol and guanidinium thiocyanate reagents with modifications to yield high quality RNA.

Development and Maintenance of Serum-Free Embryoid Bodies

The video describes the procedure for developing serum-free embryoid bodies (SFEBs) from neuronal progenitor cells using various serum-free differentiation mediums or DM. DM-2 facilitates neurons' maturation and arrangement to form SFEBs, while DM-3 is used for further growth maintenance.

Generating the 6-hydroxydopamine Rat Model of Parkinson's Disease

2025

This video demonstrates a procedure to create a rat model of Parkinson's disease by injecting the neurotoxin 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) into the brain. The neurotoxin infusion into the medial forebrain bundle (MFB) specifically targets dopaminergic neurons responsible for motor control, leading to their destruction and replicating Parkinson's disease symptoms.
