Vascular Access Technique

Vascular access technique refers to the methods used to enter a blood vessel and establish a pathway for delivering or removing fluids, medications, blood, or diagnostic samples. Clinicians advance a needle or catheter through the skin into a selected vein or artery, using anatomical landmarks or ultrasound guidance while maintaining sterile conditions and confirming catheter placement. The choice between peripheral, central, and arterial access depends on the treatment, infusion characteristics, patient condition, and expected duration. Proper technique supports reliable therapy, monitoring, and blood sampling while reducing complications such as infection, bleeding, thrombosis, and accidental injury, making it an essential skill across medicine.
