Drug Effects On Oscillations

Drug effects on oscillations describes how psychoactive and therapeutic compounds alter rhythmic electrical activity generated by neural circuits, an important aspect of brain function and behavior. By changing synaptic transmission, neuronal excitability, or the balance between excitation and inhibition, drugs can modify oscillation frequency, power, phase synchrony, and coordination across brain regions. Researchers measure these changes with electroencephalography, local field potentials, or other electrophysiological methods to relate circuit dynamics to cognition, sleep, movement, and psychiatric symptoms. This approach helps clarify drug mechanisms, identify neural biomarkers of treatment response, and guide the development of therapies for disorders involving disrupted network activity.

Here, real-time monitoring of tumor cell metabolism, combined with an in vivo chicken embryo chorio-allantoic membrane (CAM) model of metastasis, are used to evaluate novel anti-cancer targets/agents for their ability to sensitize tumor cells to DNA damaging chemotherapeutics.

In Vitro Recording of Theta Oscillations in the Mouse Hippocampus

This video demonstrates the recording of rhythmic neuronal network activity, also known as theta oscillations, in an isolated hippocampus. Electrodes are inserted into various layers and spatial positions to detect and analyze theta oscillations. This shows the unique neuronal compositions and the connectivity of the neuronal network across different layers of the hippocampus.

Assessing the Angiogenesis Effects of a Test Drug in a Rat Model of Ischemic Stroke

Begin with a rat subjected to middle cerebral artery occlusion, a surgical procedure that temporarily blocks blood flow to the brain tissue. This induces an ischemic stroke, leading to brain tissue damage.Next, remove the blockage to restore blood flow.Select rats that exhibit neurological deficits to ensure study relevance. Then, administer the test drug to the experimental group while injecting saline into the other group.Repeat the drug and saline administration. The test drug promotes...
