Enzyme Vitreous Removal

Enzyme vitreous removal is a minimally invasive approach that uses proteolytic enzymes to alter or remove the vitreous gel, the transparent material filling the eye, and relieve abnormal vitreoretinal attachment. In enzymatic vitreolysis, agents such as ocriplasmin cleave proteins including laminin and fibronectin at the vitreoretinal interface, promoting vitreous liquefaction and separation from the retina. This process is relevant to neuroscience because the retina is neural tissue and depends on an intact interface with the vitreous for normal visual function. The technique can treat selected cases of vitreomacular adhesion or traction, potentially reducing retinal distortion and the need for surgical vitrectomy.

The Foldable Capsular Vitreous Body (FCVB) is an intraocular implant that encapsulates silicone oil within a flexible capsule to reduce silicone oil-related complications. This protocol describes the surgical implantation of the FCVB via scleral incision for the treatment of complex retinal detachment and ocular trauma.

Inside living organisms, enzymes act as catalysts for many biochemical reactions involved in cellular metabolism. The role of enzymes is to reduce the activation energies of biochemical reactions by forming complexes with its substrates. The lowering of activation energies favor an increase in the rates of biochemical reactions. Enzyme deficiencies can often translate into life-threatening diseases. For example, a genetic abnormality resulting in the deficiency of the enzyme G6PD...
