Focused Ultrasound Neuromodulation

Focused ultrasound neuromodulation is a noninvasive technique that uses concentrated acoustic energy to alter neural activity in precisely targeted brain regions. A transducer focuses ultrasound through the skull, where mechanical effects from the sound waves can influence neuronal membranes and local circuit excitability without surgical electrode placement; stimulation parameters determine the direction and duration of the response. In neuroscience, the method helps researchers test causal links between brain regions and behavior while supporting studies of sensory, motor, and cognitive circuits. Its spatial precision and potential for reversible effects also make it a promising approach for investigating and developing treatments for neurological and psychiatric disorders.
