Neural Interface Monitoring

Neural interface monitoring is the measurement and analysis of signals exchanged between the nervous system and an electronic device, helping researchers assess neural activity and interface performance. Sensors such as electrodes detect electrical activity, while signal amplification, filtering, artifact reduction, and computational analysis separate meaningful neural patterns from noise and movement-related interference. In neuroscience, these measurements support brain-computer interfaces, neuroprosthetic control, and evaluation of implant stability over time. Monitoring can reveal changes in signal quality, neural responses, and device function, guiding experimental design and improving the reliability, safety, and clinical potential of technologies that record from or stimulate the nervous system.

The electrode-tissue interface of neural recording electrodes can be characterized with electrical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and cyclic voltammetry (CV). Application of voltage biasing changes the electrochemical properties of the electrode-tissue interface and can improve recording capability. Voltage biasing, EIS, CV, and neural recordings are complementary.

Here we present a protocol which characterizes the sense of agency developed over the control of sensate virtual or robotic prosthetic hands. Psychophysical questionnaires are employed to capture the explicit experience of agency, and time interval estimates (intentional binding) are employed to implicitly measure the sense of agency.

This study aims to develop a standard protocol of intra-operative neural monitoring of thyroid surgery in a porcine model. Here, we present a protocol to demonstrate general anesthesia, to compare different types of electrodes, and to investigate the electrophysiological characteristics of the normal and injured recurrent laryngeal nerves.

2017

A wireless, bidirectional system for multi-channel neural recordings and stimulation in freely behaving rats is introduced. The system is light and compact, thus having minimal impact on the animal´s behavioral repertoire. Moreover, this bidirectional system provides a sophisticated tool to assess causal relationships between brain activation patterns and behavior.
