Pheromone Communication

Pheromone communication is a form of chemical signaling in which an organism releases compounds that alter the behavior or physiology of other members of the same species, making it a key subject in neuroscience and sensory biology. In many animals, pheromones are detected through olfactory pathways, including the main olfactory system or vomeronasal organ, and neural circuits translate these cues into responses such as attraction, territorial behavior, aggression, or reproductive changes. Research on pheromone communication links molecular detection to brain activity, hormone regulation, and social behavior. It also informs studies of mating systems, animal models of social processing, and how genes, environment, and neural circuits shape communication.

In mice, the ability to detect pheromones is principally mediated by the vomeronasal organ (VNO). Here, an acute tissue slice preparation of VNO for performing calcium imaging is described. This physiological approach allows observations of subpopulations and/or individual neurons in a living tissue and is convenient for receptor-ligand identification.

Communication between two animals occurs when one animal transmits an information signal that causes a change in the animal that receives the information. Organisms communicate with one another in a host of different ways. Signals can be auditory, chemical, visual, tactile, or a combination of these. Communication is a critical behavioral adaptation that promotes survival, growth, and reproduction. Types of Communication A common form of communication is visual. Visual communication can be...

The forelegs and proboscis of Drosophila contain a rich repertoire of gustatory sensory neurons. Here, we present a method using calcium imaging to measure physiological responses from sensory neurons in the foreleg and proboscis of live flies upon exogenous application of a gustatory pheromone.
