Myasthenia Gravis Therapy

Myasthenia gravis therapy comprises treatments that improve muscle strength and reduce the autoimmune disruption of neuromuscular transmission, helping prevent disability and respiratory complications. Symptomatic therapy commonly uses pyridostigmine, an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor that prolongs acetylcholine activity at the neuromuscular junction, while corticosteroids and other immunosuppressants reduce pathogenic immune responses; intravenous immunoglobulin or plasma exchange can provide more rapid improvement during severe exacerbations. Treatment plans may also include thymectomy for selected patients and careful monitoring of medication effects, supporting individualized pharmacological management and reducing the risk of myasthenic crisis.

Myasthenia Gravis: Overview and Treatment

2023

Myasthenia gravis is a neuromuscular transmission disorder characterized by weakness and increased fatigability of skeletal muscles. It is an autoimmune disease affecting approximately one in 2000 people, where antibodies against the α1 subunit of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors are produced. These antibodies interfere with the function of the nicotinic receptors in three ways: by binding to the receptor and disrupting acetylcholine binding; by causing cross-linking of receptors which leads...

Myasthenia Gravis ll: Pathophysiology

2026

The disease process of myasthenia gravis begins at the neuromuscular junction, where antibodies attack key proteins needed for muscle activation. This immune reaction weakens signal transmission, leading to the characteristic muscle fatigue and weakness that define the condition.Immune-Mediated DamageIn most individuals, antibodies target acetylcholine receptors (AChRs) on the postsynaptic membrane of muscle cells. By blocking acetylcholine binding, these antibodies prevent the nerve signal...

Myasthenia Gravis: Diagnostic Tests

2023

Myasthenia gravis is an autoimmune condition affecting neuromuscular transmission, causing generalized weakness in skeletal muscles. Initial diagnoses rely on patients' signs, symptoms, and medical history. The challenge lies in distinguishing myasthenia from other muscular dystrophies. An important diagnostic feature is the significant improvement of symptoms after administering anticholinesterase inhibitors. The edrophonium test is a diagnostic tool for myasthenia gravis. It involves...

Synthesis of human monoclonal antibodies is the first step in studies aimed at unraveling the pathophysiological mechanisms of auto-antibody-mediated immune responses. We have developed a protocol to generate recombinant human immunoglobulin G (IgG) monoclonal antibodies from blood sorted B cells, including B-cell isolation, antibody cloning and in vitro synthesis.

Group Therapy

Group therapy is a sociocultural approach to psychological treatment, where individuals with shared psychological challenges come together under the guidance of a mental health professional. This therapeutic modality offers unique opportunities for individuals to connect, share, and grow within the context of a supportive group. By fostering mutual understanding and collaboration, group therapy can address a range of psychological concerns effectively, often complementing or surpassing the...
