Dopamine Reward Learning

Dopamine reward learning is a process through which experiences and their outcomes shape future behavior by updating the value assigned to actions, cues, and choices. When an outcome differs from what was expected, midbrain dopamine neurons can produce phasic changes in signaling to the striatum and related brain circuits; these reward prediction errors strengthen or weaken associations through reinforcement learning. In psychology, this framework helps explain motivation, habit formation, decision-making, and adaptive behavior across changing environments. It also provides a foundation for studying how altered reward processing contributes to addiction, compulsive behavior, and disorders involving motivation, while informing computational models and behavioral experiments.

An Introduction to Reward and Addiction

2023

Consequences play a major role in controlling our behavior. If the consequence is a reward, then it encourages the associated behavior. Rewards can come in many forms such as a pleasant feeling, money, or food. However, sometimes an individual engages in compulsive behavior despite of negative consequences, and this state is known as addiction. Administration of addictive substances is neurochemically rewarding, which ultimately causes a loss of control in limiting the intake. Scientists aim...

Measuring Dopamine Uptake in Mouse Brain Synaptosomes Using Radiolabeled Dopamine

2025

This video demonstrates the assessment of dopamine uptake in synaptosomes harvested from mouse brains. It outlines steps for preparing synaptosomes for dopamine uptake via dopamine transporters, treating them with varying concentrations of radiolabeled dopamine, isolating the synaptosomes, and measuring radioactivity to quantify dopamine uptake.
