Nerve Fiber Bundles

Nerve fiber bundles are organized groups of axons that connect neurons and brain regions, enabling communication across the nervous system and supporting behavior and mental processes. Within these bundles, electrical impulses travel along axons, while myelin can insulate many fibers and increase signal transmission efficiency; bundles form larger pathways that carry information between specialized neural areas. In psychology, studying these pathways helps relate brain connectivity to perception, learning, memory, emotion, and movement. Methods such as diffusion tensor imaging can map white-matter tracts in living brains, supporting research on individual differences, neurological conditions, and how disrupted connectivity may affect cognition and behavior.

In Vivo Single-Fiber Recording of Sciatic Nerve C-Fibers in Rats

2025

This video demonstrates a single-fiber recording of C-fiber nerve conduction in rats. An anesthetized rat is incised to expose the sciatic nerve, which provides sensory and motor supply to the lower limbs. The individual C-fibers are then exposed. Electrical stimulation is provided using stimulus electrodes implanted in the foot, and a response is recorded from a single nerve fiber.

Source: Hamid, H. S., et al. Three-dimensional Imaging and Analysis of Mitochondria within Human Intraepidermal Nerve Fibers. J. Vis. Exp. (2017) This video demonstrates the method for visualizing nerve-specific mitochondria using three-dimensional imaging. It outlines the process of acquiring sequential scans of pre-labeled intraepidermal nerve fibers and generating 3D surface images to isolate and display mitochondria in relation to nerve structures.

Multiplexed Fluorescent Microarray for Human Salivary Protein Analysis Using Polymer Microspheres and Fiber-optic Bundles

We describe a procedure for profiling salivary proteins using multiplexed microsphere-based antibody arrays. Monoclonal antibodies were covalently linked to fluorescent dye-encoded 4.5 μm polymer microspheres using carbodiimide chemistry. The modified microspheres were deposited in fiber-optic microwells to measure protein levels in saliva using fluorescence sandwich immunoassays.
