Mehrdad Khakbiz

Senior Scientist
Mehrdad Khakbiz is a Senior Scientist at Rutgers University, where his interdisciplinary research focuses on biomedical engineering, biomaterials, nanomedicine, advanced pharmaceutical manufacturing technologies, and artificial intelligence. His work encompasses the development and characterization of nanostructured and biodegradable materials, controlled drug delivery systems, tissue-engineered scaffolds, surface-modified medical implants, and pharmaceutical processes. He has worked with layered double hydroxides (LDHs), metal-organic frameworks such as ZIFs, electrospun nanofibrous scaffolds, biodegradable metallic implants, vascular and neural tissue-engineering models, and 3D/4D printing technologies. In recent years, Dr. Khakbiz has incorporated artificial intelligence and machine learning into his research. He combines experimental studies with computational modeling, AI-based analysis, and data-driven methods to investigate nanoparticle characteristics, surface nanotopography, material properties, and advanced pharmaceutical manufacturing processes. These studies link material properties and processing parameters with biological performance and process optimization. Dr. Khakbiz has authored more than 100 scientific publications and actively serves as an editor and reviewer for several peer-reviewed journals.
