Songyan holds a master’s degree in Botany from the Kunming Institute of Botany, University of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, following a bachelor’s degree in Ecology from Sun Yat-sen University. His research focuses on fungal and plant diversity, evolution, and genetics, with several papers published. In addition to his academic work, Songyan is a dedicated science communicator and has contributed to the publication and translation of two popular science books in life sciences, which led him further into the publishing industry. His career experience spans both the cosmetics industry and a conservation NGO—roles that have deepened his appreciation for collaboration and the dissemination of knowledge within the scientific community. As a Science Editor at JoVE, he is driven to collaborate with researchers from different fields to make science methods and discoveries shared more effectively across borders and disciplines. Outside of work, Songyan enjoys hiking, photography, and cooking, with a particular passion for capturing the beauty of native plant and fungi species through his lens. songyan.zhou@jove.com
