Sulakshana Karkala, Ph.D.

Sulakshana Karkala holds a PhD in Plant Biotechnology, with research in algal biotechnology focused on developing sustainable protein and biofuel alternatives. She has a strong background in scientific research, sustainability-driven innovation, and science communication. At JoVE, she contributes to creating clear, accurate, and engaging scientific resources that support researchers, educators, and students worldwide, helping translate complex experimental concepts into accessible learning tools. Her work and research interests center on sustainability in biotechnology and promoting ethical approaches in scientific research. She has collaborated with academic communities to encourage responsible research practices and to foster greater empathy toward animals involved in scientific studies. Beyond her work in science communication, Sulakshana is actively involved in animal rescue and welfare initiatives. She was recognized with the Karnataka Woman’s Leadership Award for her efforts in bridging scientific understanding with compassion for animals and promoting responsible care and rescue practices.
