Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells

Las células madre son células indiferenciadas que se dividen y producen diferentes tipos de células. Normalmente, las células que se han diferenciado en un tipo celular específico son posmitóticas,es decir, ya no se dividen. Sin embargo, los científicos han encontrado una manera de reprogramar estas células maduras para que se "desdiferencian" y regresen a un estado proliferativo no especializado. Estas células también son pluripotentes como las células madre embrionarias,capaces de producir todo tipo de células y, por lo tanto, se denominan células madre pluripotentes inducidas (iPSC). Las iPSC son potencialmente valiosas en medicina, porque un paciente que necesita un tipo de célula particular,por ejemplo, alguien con una retina dañada debido a la degeneración macular, podría recibir un trasplante de las células requeridas, generadas a partir de otro tipo de célula en su propio cuerpo.
