Behavioral Chamber Design

Behavioral chamber design is the planning and construction of controlled spaces used to observe and measure animal or human behavior under defined experimental conditions. A chamber regulates factors such as dimensions, lighting, sound, temperature, airflow, and access to stimuli, while cameras or sensors record movement, interactions, and responses with minimal disturbance. Careful placement of walls, entrances, objects, and recording equipment helps standardize testing conditions and reduce external influences that could bias results. In behavioral research, well-designed chambers support reproducible assays of locomotion, learning, anxiety, social interaction, and stimulus response, improving the reliability and comparability of experimental findings.

We present a behavioral chamber designed to assess cognitive performance. We provide data showing that once acquired, zebrafish remember the task 8 weeks later. We also show that hyperglycemic zebrafish have altered cognitive performance, indicating that this paradigm is applicable to studies assessing cognition and memory.

A design is presented to enable cost-effective low-temperature battery cycling for 2032 coin cells in a low-humidity environment. Cells are cycled at 0 °C inside a chamber cooled by thermoelectric modules. This simple design can be adapted for experiments that require similar thermal and humidity-controlled environments or different battery geometries.

Behavioral Genetics and Its Designs

2024

Behavior genetics explores how genetic inheritance influences human behavior. It focuses on how genes, passed from parents to offspring, contribute to the development of behavioral traits and tendencies. This branch of genetics seeks to understand the complex interplay between inherited genetic factors and environmental influences in shaping our behaviors. The primary methodologies used in behavior genetics include family studies, twin studies, and adoption studies, each providing unique...

Design and Analysis of Temperature Preference Behavior and its Circadian Rhythm in Drosophila

We recently identified a novel Drosophila circadian output, temperature preference rhythm (TPR), in which the preferred temperature in flies rises during the day and falls during the night. TPR is regulated independently from another circadian output, locomotor activity. Here we describe the design and analysis of TPR in Drosophila.

We present a method to apply a physiological electric field to migrating, immortalized prostate cells in a custom-made galvanotaxis chamber. Using this method, we demonstrate that 2 lines of non-tumorigenic prostate cells demonstrate different degrees of migration directionality in the field.
