Medium Subtracted Filtering

Medium Subtracted Filtering is an image-processing approach that reduces background intensity and enhances biologically relevant features in microscopy and other bioengineering data. The method estimates the local or regional signal contributed by the surrounding medium, then subtracts that background from each image region while preserving stronger spatial variations associated with cells, structures, or materials. This correction can improve contrast, reduce uneven illumination and measurement bias, and support more reliable segmentation and quantitative analysis. Researchers use it as a preprocessing step when interpreting fluorescence images, tracking engineered tissues, analyzing biomaterials, or extracting signal-dependent features from complex experimental datasets.

Passive Filters

Passive filters are utilized to shape the frequency spectrum of signals across a diverse array of applications. These filters, using only passive elements like resistors (R), inductors (L), and capacitors (C), are capable of selectively allowing or blocking certain frequency ranges without the need for external power sources. Low-Pass Filters Low-pass filters are designed to transmit signals with frequencies lower than the cutoff frequency, ωc, and attenuate those above it. The cutoff frequency...

Here, we present a study to evaluate the anti-viral efficacy of copper- and silver-based surface coatings on air filters. Using a bioaerosol chamber and Phi6 bacteriophage, this method quantifies viral inactivation and mechanical filtration efficiency for self-sanitizing indoor air technologies.

Measuring Reaction Time and Donders' Method of Subtraction

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University The ambition of experimental psychology is to characterize the mental events that support the human ability to solve problems, perceive the world, and turn thoughts into words and sentences. But people cannot see or feel those mental events; they cannot be weighed, combined in test tubes, or grown in a dish. Wanting to study mental life, nonetheless, Franciscus Donders, a Dutch ophthalmologist in the early 1800s, came up with a...

Detection of Internal Carotid Artery Narrowing Using Digital Subtraction Angiography

Position a human patient with internal carotid stenosis, a condition characterized by narrowing of the internal carotid artery, on the imaging table for digital subtraction angiography (DSA). Insert an angiocatheter into the common carotid artery at the fourth cervical vertebra level. Capture a pre-contrast X-ray image to record background structures like bones and soft tissues using X-ray irradiation. Administer an iodine-based contrast medium into the carotid artery. The contrast medium...

Active Filters

2025

Active filters are electronic circuits that use operational amplifiers (op-amps), resistors, and capacitors to filter out unwanted frequency components from a signal. A first-order low-pass active filter is designed to pass signals with a frequency lower than a certain cutoff frequency and attenuate frequencies higher than that cutoff frequency. The transfer function for a first-order low-pass active filter is: Where Af is the gain at low frequencies also known as the dc gain, s is the...
