Antibiotic-induced Donor

An antibiotic-induced donor is a bacterial cell whose ability to transfer genetic material is triggered or enhanced by exposure to an antibiotic, making the concept important for studying horizontal gene transfer and resistance evolution. In susceptible systems, antibiotic stress activates cellular responses that can increase expression or mobilization of conjugative plasmids, allowing donor cells to form mating pili and transfer DNA to recipient cells through cell-to-cell contact. Researchers use antibiotic-induced donors to investigate plasmid transmission, resistance-gene dissemination, and bacterial adaptation under drug pressure. These studies help clarify how antimicrobial treatment can influence microbial communities and inform strategies for limiting the spread of resistance.

We have developed a microfluidic platform for rapid antibiotic susceptibility testing. Fluid is passed at high speeds over bacteria immobilized on the bottom of a microfluidic channel. In the presence of stress and antibiotic, susceptible strains of bacteria die rapidly. However, resistant bacteria can survive these stressful conditions.
