Estradiol Pellet Supplementation

Estradiol pellet supplementation is a method for providing a sustained, controlled supply of estradiol, an estrogen hormone, in biological research and therapeutic studies. A hormone-containing pellet is typically implanted beneath the skin, where the material gradually releases estradiol into surrounding tissue and the circulation, producing more stable exposure than repeated dosing. Researchers use this approach to examine estrogen receptor signaling, reproductive physiology, bone maintenance, behavior, and other hormone-responsive processes, while controlling for changes in endogenous hormone production. By standardizing estradiol availability, pellet supplementation helps clarify how estrogen influences tissues and supports consistent comparisons across experimental groups.

We describe the manufacture of compressed hormone pellets, as well as subcutaneous surgical implantation into mice. This strategy can be combined with the growth of cell and tissue xenografts under the renal capsule of athymic nude mice to evaluate hormonal carcinogenesis and regulation of benign prostate growth.

2016

In this study, a protocol was developed to produce good quality pellets using a flat die pellet mill at reduced specific energy consumption testing high-moisture corn stover and a starch based binder. The results indicated that adding a corn starch binder improved the pellet durability, reduced percent fines and decreased specific energy consumption.
