Film Thickness Monitoring

Film thickness monitoring is the measurement of the thickness and uniformity of thin layers deposited on a surface, an important step in controlling coatings and biological interfaces. Depending on the material and process, instruments track changes in optical reflectance, interference patterns, or mass during deposition to estimate film growth in real time. In biology, this approach helps characterize protein layers, polymer coatings, lipid membranes, and biomaterial surfaces without relying only on post-processing measurements. Reliable thickness data support reproducible fabrication, assessment of surface stability, and evaluation of how coating properties influence cell attachment, molecular interactions, and device performance.

Source: Logan G. Kiefer, Andrew R. Falkowski, and Taylor D. Sparks, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, The University of Utah, Salt Lake City, UT Electroplating is a process that uses electric current to reduce dissolved metal cations so that they form a thin coating on an electrode. Other thin film deposition techniques include chemical vapor deposition (CVD), spin coating, dip coating, and sputter deposition among others. CVD uses a gas-phase precursor of the element to be...

We describe a method for the fabrication of large-area (up to 13 cm diameter) and ultrathin (as thin as 8 nm) polymer films. Instead of using a sacrificial interlayer to delaminate the film from its substrate, we use a self-limiting surface treatment suitable for arbitrarily large areas.
